Your Will Be Done
–Beth Moore
As I read this in her 'Beloved Disciple: The Life and Ministry of John'. I reminisced upon things I had gone through in times past in relation to obedience to God.
The statement “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” made by our Lord and savior reiterates in my mind. Goes to show that we as His children have little room to beg God to change His mind on a decision, or in Jesus' words, "let this cup pass from me" (Matthew 26:39).
There were times... See, honestly, I love foodπ and there are times Dad would require me to fast extensively or do some other thing that would be hard for me. Now in those times, I'd be faced with two– no, three choices I later learnt: Either you do what He says or you disobey Him and the third one, you beg Him to change His mind or postpone the taking of that action. I was used to either resolving to doing what He had asked, or flat out running away to do my own thing and then coming back to ask for forgiveness when conviction and guilt hit. We've all been there, I know.
Story time: one day I was praying and Dad said to do something that at the time, was hard, very hard for me. Boy, I've never left the place of prayer that quick my entire life, it was like I was being chased. In my efforts to go sulk and complain and probably disobey, The Holy Spirit held me back and said, 'He is your Father. Try going to tell Him how hard it is for you, and if He says no, ask for strength to do it'.
I felt very special and convicted after He said this to me, and instead of complaining and disobeying, I jejely (gently) went back to God saying 'Dad, I'm sorry, please forgive me for running away (even if I can't actually run from Him: Psalm 139: 7-14 tells me that). The truth is, what you asked of me is a bit hard for me, is it possible for You to change your mind, if it is your Will.'
While God didn't grant my request that day, He gave me strength to carry it out. I realized that day, instead of disobeying, I could ask for strength to do what has been asked, and my gracious Father who loves me will give me the strength to do His will which is for my good and for His Glory! Amen, Hallelujah!
Small tip on obedience
"Obedience is seeped in agreement. If you looked beyond obedience, you would see the conforming to whatever ideology the instruction obeyed stemmed from. It is termed as obedience because a hierarchy exists. If there was no hierarchy, it would be a contract or a covenant: an agreement made between parties in equal standing.
When you find it hard to obey the Lord. Try agreeing with Him.
When He instructs you like a father, and you see that you're struggling to obey like a child. Agree like a joint heir. You'll find it easier to obey somebody you're in agreement with.
But! Trust also is a key ingredient.
Both obedience and agreement need trust to thrive
You're finding it hard to obey? Check your trust. Finding it hard to agree? Check your trust.
Ha, new formula unlocked" ππ
